Luxury Sedans Comparison: BMW 7 Series & Mercedes S-Class

Sven Kramer Sep 17, 2024

The battle for the ultimate luxury sedan continues with the latest offerings from BMW and Mercedes. In the arena of high-end cars, few rivalries are as intense as the one between the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes S-Class. Both vehicles represent the pinnacle of automotive technology, blending luxury with cutting-edge features.

If you are in the market for one of these luxury titans, here are the deeper-look details to help you decide.

BMW 7 Series Versus Mercedes S-Class: Pricing & Powertrains

Let’s start by talking about the prices to assess our comparison between the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes S-Class. The BMW M760e xDrive comes with a starting price of $149,000, while the Mercedes S580 e L AMG Line Premium Plus Executive is slightly more expensive at $151,500. For buyers looking at these price points, the extra dollars likely won’t sway their decision. But it is interesting to note that the Mercedes costs just a tad more.

Auto News / Under the hood, the BMW M760e xDrive is powered by a 3.0-litre 6-cylinder in-line turbo engine paired with an electric motor, churning out a combined 563bhp.

It reaches 0-62 mph in just 4.3 seconds. Surely, this makes it a seriously quick car for its size.

On the other hand, the Mercedes S580 e also features a 3.0-litre 6-cylinder in-line turbo engine. But it is slightly less powerful, generating 510bhp. It hits 62 mph in 5.2 seconds, a bit slower but still fast enough for most luxury car enthusiasts.

Tech Highlights of the Two Luxury Limos

The BMW 7 Series takes pride in its autonomous driving features. Its advanced driver assistance system allows the car to steer within its lane and maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front, even at speeds of up to 130mph, which is handy for autobahn driving. This makes for a stress-free experience on long drives or during heavy traffic.

However, the Mercedes S-Class excels in a different area: Its interior technology. Mercedes is known for creating a cabin that feels like a luxurious, high-tech cocoon. The S580’s interior features a massive OLED touchscreen and an augmented reality heads-up display that projects navigation instructions onto the road in front of you.

Size and Weight

Both the BMW 7 Series and Mercedes S-Class are long, elegant vehicles. But BMW has made the new 7 Series even bigger than its predecessor, measuring a whopping 5,391mm in length. That is 130mm longer, 48mm wider, and 5mm taller than the previous model. Despite its larger size, the M760e weighs in at around 2.5 tonnes.

On the other hand, the Mercedes S-Class is slightly heavier at 2,631kg, largely due to its bigger 28.6kWh battery pack.

This might make a difference for those who want to prioritize EV driving.

The Difference in Driving Experience

On the road, both cars offer an ultra-smooth and refined driving experience. However, they cater to slightly different tastes. The BMW 7 Series feels sporty, with responsive steering and plenty of power at your disposal. You bet! It is a large car. But it is surprisingly nimble for its size, and the xDrive all-wheel-drive system helps it grip the road firmly.

On the other hand, the Mercedes S-Class focuses on offering a serene and ultra-comfortable ride. It glides along the road effortlessly, and its adaptive suspension soaks up bumps with ease. The S-Class feels more like a limousine, whereas the 7 Series, while luxurious, offers a more driver-focused experience.
