Fiat Pledges to Become EV-Only By 2030 – Here’s A Look At Its First All-Electric Vehicle

Ami Ciccone Jul 07, 2021

Joining the lineup of auto-manufacturers shifting their company stance towards sustainable practices, Fiat has made clear its commitment to becoming an EV-only brand by 2030. From 2025 onwards, the Italian car manufacturer has pledged to rid its global line-up of all combustion-engine models.

Where Did This Sudden Change Come From?

Alongside its existing extremely popular combustion engine 500 city car, the company recently launched an electric-only model. Fiat claims it wants to lower the environmental stress barrier by increasing access to electric cars, ultimately improving air quality. The auto-manufacturer also plans on improving the charging infrastructure for EVs.

Introducing the Fiat 500 Electric

Even though it shares exterior similarities with the petrol Fiat 500, there isn’t one constituent in this model that is already in its predecessor. The all-electric 500 is larger, with a brand new interior, body, chassis, and platform. And obviously, the most unique feature is its propulsion – it’s an electric car, after all.

With all the changes to the underskin and no chunky gearbox or engine to accommodate, the Fiat 500 could be made into any shape the company found suitable. Fiat Group’s branches across the globe were given the opportunity to propose designs for a thorough reinvention of the car. Nevertheless, even after all the trouble, the auto-manufacturer decided familiarity was the best course: a modernized yet old-school iteration of a 1957 shape.

One significant feature that 500’s competitors are void of is the extensive textile sunroof that lets of the rear windshield and opens all the way back. The new Fiat 500 electric is 56mm wider, 29mm taller, and 61mm longer than its combustion engine predecessor. The surfaces are uncomplicated, and the proportions bolstered.

According to the World Harmonized Light-duty Vehicles Test Procedure (WTLP), its 42kWh battery model is enough for up to 199 miles. However, if you’re looking for a second vehicle that doesn’t venture far from home, the cheaper 24kWH car, which claims 118 miles WLTP, is the model for you. Both versions come with a Samsung battery suspended low in the frame.

Wrapping It Up

As of May, the Fiat 500 is the only open-roofed EV in the UK. Since your EV is good for city skies, why not enjoy some of that sky yourself?
