Black Yale Student Fell Asleep In Common Area And Police Were Called

Ami Ciccone May 14, 2018

Most Americans, especially those who have light skin, believe that racism no longer exists in the United States, however, a huge number of people in the country who are of color believe otherwise and they have the right to think so.

One of the most obvious reasons for it is that for the past couple of months, there have been so many incidents of Americans calling the police on people who are not white, even if these people are literally minding their own business and are just doing what other people are normally doing.

One of the most recent events is when a Starbucks employee called the cops on black people who are merely waiting for their friend, the employee said that the said men did not purchase anything and wishes to use the bathroom so they were asked to leave.

Yale University president claims racism happens everywhere everyday

However, the other people who are in the said Starbucks have done the same thing but because they weren’t of color, no one bothered. This then led to the Starbucks management to put their employees in a workshop to get rid of the biased racism. Another recent incident was when a white woman called the police on the black family, just because they were barbecuing. The video of the white women went viral and received major backlash because of the racism claims.

These racial bias incidents are getting out of hand and the most recent one happened at Yale, continue reading to find out more about it.

Racial discrimination strikes again, this time at Yale University

Black Yale Student Fell Asleep And Police Were Called

A Yale graduate student named Lolade Siyonbola were studying and suddenly fell asleep in the common room. She had her books and papers out since she was writing a paper but she had managed to turn the lights off before sleeping. However, another student named Sarah Braasch walked in and turned on the lights then saw Siyonbola. She then called the police and reported that there is a black woman that she doesn’t know who is sleeping in the common room.

According to Braascnh, no one is allowed to sleep in the common room and that is the main reason why she called the cops. However, the police said that it is not a police matter since no law has been broken or no crime has been committed, Siyonbola simply just fell asleep in the common room and if Braasch was to complain, it should have been to the university and not to the authorities.

The police came and asked for Siyonbola’s identification, however, the Yale graduate student felt as if it wasn’t fair to prove her justification since she pays the tuition just like everybody else, but authorities were called on her since she fell asleep at the wrong place just because she was of color.

The police then left after she gave them her information and she also revealed that this wasn’t the first time Braascnh called the cops, because she did it to Siyonbola’s friend as well who is also black. Braascnh allegedly reported a black guy on the staircase. Because of what happened, Braascnh was admonished by the university officers, this is according to the Vice President of the Yale student life, Kimberly M. Goff-Crews. Braaschn had to delete or deactivate her social media accounts for the time being since she would definitely receive major backlash.

Racial Bias in America

In a statement released as an email by the President of Yale University Peter Salovey, he referred to racism as an “unqualified evil in our society” and he made it pretty clear that racism does not just happen every single day on their campus but to the entire country and it unacceptable. Simonbola then posted on her Facebook account and gave a detailed scenario of what happened. She then encouraged people to tell their stories that are similar to her.

According to some black people, whenever they were being talked to by the authorities, they felt like they were immediately guilty since they treated with suspicion all the time because of the fact that they were black. The number of police reports turning out to be black people doing normal things is getting ridiculously high that it is like the society is going backward. Racism is said to be a thing of the past and people are all equal now, but these incidents definitely prove otherwise.
