The US agency is responsible for sheltering the migrants seeking asylum on California-Mexico border. Almost 150 Americans are sitting in Tijuana waiting for a positive move of US government but the Trump admin has no plans to increase the capacity to process these migrants.
However, Obama’s policies for these migrants were totally different as he built temporary cities known as tent cities for the migrants. Obama also sent extra officers to the California-Mexico border to process more migrants. But now the situation is totally different, as more than 100 men, women, and children sleep on the concrete on the Mexican side of the border. And it looks like CBP (Custom and Border Protection) has no plans to increase the migrants capacity in the United States.
Last week an official statement was released by CBP, in which it was said that San Ysidro, the point where migrants enter the US from Tijuana, has reached its capacity. The statement said that at this time the capacity is full and CBP officers cannot allow any more migrant without the appropriate entry documentation.
While giving an interview, the CBP commissioner, Kevin McAleenan said that for now we don’t have the capacity for further migrants and anyone who comes to California-Mexico border must wait until our officers are able to process migrants facilities.
The US agency which is responsible for handling these migrants has sent more officers to San Ysidro, but according to resources, these officers had no positive impact as the migrants were still sleeping on the Mexcian side. Also, the migrants were unable to cross the border to claim their US citizenship.
According to a Republican congressman, making them (migrants) wait on the other side of the border, is a part of Trump’s policy. The aide further told that the president wants them to wait as he wants US public to see how many people are trying to exploit the loopholes in the US asylum system. The strategy differs from the past, said the aide.
Before claiming the asylum, the migrants must know that they can be persecuted in their home country base on the color, religion, nationality, and race. The same situation occurred in 2014 and 2016 when a lot of people crossed the border. And to avoid any calamity, Obama’s administration filled the borders with resources for the incoming migrants.
However, a few houses were built by CBP in Rio Grande Valley to facilitate the migrants. But when Trump took charge in early 2017, all such houses were demolished as the number of people crossing borders were reduced. The tents built in Texas and Donna were demolished at that time.
According to León Rodríguez, a former director of immigration said that Obama’s administration anticipated the upsurge in border crossings and then planned accordingly to handle the situation. If you already know that people will be coming to the borders, we must surge the officers at the borders, said Rodríguez. There should be a process to process those migrants.
Earlier this month, Donald Trump signed an act in which it was asked to send national guard troops to the Mexican border and fight against the illegal migrants. But the act didn’t allow troops to be physical with the migrants. The department of homeland security released an official statement in which it was written that their aim is to make the America safe and for this purpose are deploying national guard troops at the border.
It was further told in the statement that deployment of national guards would give America an immediate control at the California-Mexico border. On Wednesday, it was confirmed by the White House Officials that Mr. President had signed the proclamation. Before signing the proclamation, Trump said that at this time US border did not have any walls for the safety and therefore they are planting the national guards for securing the US boundaries.
The decision was made after Trump had a meeting with National Security Council on Wednesday. How many troops will protect the border and for how long they will do it, will be finalized in the coming days, said the officials.
