Trump’s New Air Force One vs. the Old Presidential Jet. What’s Different?

Helen Hayward Jul 19, 2026

The aircraft carrying the President of the United States is far more than a mode of transportation. It serves as a flying command center equipped for security, communication, and global travel.

President Donald Trump has long expressed interest in replacing the aging presidential aircraft with a more modern design. That vision became reality when a customized Boeing 747-8i, gifted by Qatar and designated the VC-25B Bridge, officially flew as Air Force One for the first time.

Before boarding the aircraft at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland, Trump described it as “the best plane ever built.” The aircraft later traveled to Medora, North Dakota, for the dedication of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library.

Designed with upgraded protection systems, improved performance, and a luxury-focused interior, the VC-25B Bridge introduces several changes compared to the outgoing VC-25A, which has served American presidents since the early 1990s.

A New Chapter for Air Force One

The outgoing Air Force One fleet consists of two customized Boeing 747-200B aircraft designated VC-25A. The first aircraft, SAM 28000, entered service in 1990 during President George H.W. Bush’s administration, followed by the nearly identical SAM 29000 in 1991. These aircraft have transported every U.S. president for more than three decades.

The newly introduced VC-25B Bridge is based on a Boeing 747-8i built in 2012. Before becoming the temporary presidential aircraft, it served as a luxury jet for the Qatari royal family. The aircraft is known as the “Bridge” because it will operate until Boeing completes the official VC-25B presidential fleet, currently expected in 2027 or 2028.

The size difference is noticeable. The VC-25A measures 231 feet 10 inches in length with a wingspan of 195 feet 8 inches. By comparison, the VC-25B Bridge stretches 250 feet long and features a wingspan of 224 feet 5 inches, making it the larger aircraft.

Exterior Design Reflects a New Direction

For decades, Air Force One carried the light blue and white color scheme introduced by First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy for the Boeing VC-137C, SAM 26000, during President John F. Kennedy’s administration in 1962. She also approved adding the words “United States of America” to the aircraft, while the tail displayed an American flag with the stars facing forward in accordance with the U.S. Flag Code.

Trump replaced that historic appearance with a red, white, and navy blue design. The aircraft also features a redesigned waving American flag on the tail instead of the traditional straight version.

During a tour of the aircraft at Joint Base Andrews on June 19, Trump explained the updated design, saying, “As you know, we’ve always gone with a straight little noodle and I never loved that. Now we have a wavy, beautiful flag. We’re waving it proudly because our country is doing so well.”

The Air Force had previously rejected the darker navy color during Trump’s first term after thermal studies suggested additional testing would be necessary to prevent overheating. The preferred color scheme was ultimately approved during his second term.

Better Speed, Range, and Efficiency

Performance is another area where the new aircraft moves ahead of its predecessor.

The VC-25A uses four General Electric CF6-80C2B1 engines, each producing 56,700 pounds of thrust. The aircraft cruises at approximately 630 miles per hour and can travel about 7,800 miles without refueling.

The VC-25B Bridge is powered by four GEnx-2B engines, each generating 66,500 pounds of thrust. According to the White House, the upgraded engines also produce around 16 tons less carbon dioxide per trip. The aircraft reaches speeds of about 660 miles per hour while extending its range to roughly 8,900 miles.

Both aircraft retain the ability to refuel in midair, allowing long-distance missions without landing when necessary.

Interior Luxury and Updated Workspace

Although the VC-25A received cosmetic updates under different administrations, its overall cabin layout changed very little over 35 years. President Bill Clinton introduced tan leather seating in the conference room, while President Barack Obama selected darker brown furniture. Even with those changes, the aircraft largely retained its beige walls and traditional wood paneling.

The VC-25B Bridge presents a noticeably different interior. Gold-colored light fixtures, polished surfaces, reclining massage chairs, and upgraded furnishings appear throughout the aircraft.

Trump referred to it as “the world’s most luxurious plane.” The jet includes a primary bedroom with an attached bathroom featuring a walk-in shower, multiple private office spaces, comfortable lounge areas with couches, and an upgraded press section fitted with reclining massage chairs.

Cost and Ongoing Questions

Instagram | yokotaairbase | Air Force Secretary Meink projected a $400 million retrofit cost, but lawmakers fear a $1 billion price tag.

Each VC-25A aircraft originally cost approximately $325 million. Boeing is currently developing the permanent VC-25B fleet under a contract valued at about $3.9 billion. Those aircraft were initially expected in 2024, but delivery has been delayed until at least 2027 or 2028.

The interim VC-25B Bridge came from Qatar as a gift reportedly valued at around $400 million. The exact cost of converting the aircraft into a secure presidential platform remains classified.

Secretary of the Air Force Troy E. Meink informed Congress in June 2025 that the retrofit would cost less than $400 million. Some lawmakers, however, argued the final expense could approach $1 billion in taxpayer funding.

In July 2025, The New York Times reported that $934 million had been transferred from a nuclear modernization budget tied to upgrades for aging ground-based weapons systems into a classified project.

The publication suggested the funding could be connected to the new Air Force One because the presidential aircraft is equipped with systems that allow the president to issue nuclear strike orders. The U.S. Air Force declined to comment on the report.

How the New Presidential Aircraft Stands Apart

The VC-25B Bridge introduces larger dimensions, stronger engines, greater flight range, and lower emissions while replacing an aircraft that has represented the presidency since the administration of President George H.W. Bush.

It also brings a redesigned exterior, a luxury-focused interior, and updated technology intended to serve until Boeing delivers the next generation of official VC-25B aircraft.

While debates continue over costs and funding, the aircraft marks a significant change in the evolution of Air Force One, combining modern aviation capability with the specialized security and communications expected from the nation’s most recognized aircraft.
